The four year rollercoaster ride through the halls of
lonathan Dayton has entered its final loop. As graduation
approaches we reminisce about the ups and downs of high
school and wonder where time has gone. Images of the
dreaded first day cloud our minds but are quickly replaced
by fond memories of pep rallies, football games, the senior
prom and the homecoming dance. We try to forget our
years of final exams but we will never forget the faculty that
so enriched our lives by sharing knowledge and a part of
themselves. We endured four years of worrying about our
futures but have made promises to always remember
special friendships. For the rest of our lives we will carry with
us memories of lonathan Dayton, that red brick roller-
coaster which has greatly affected our lives.

AND CURRICULUM

ADMINISTRATION

Mr. Manuel Pereira

"Big Man on Campus" is definitely an ac-
curate description of Dayton's vice-principal,
Mr. Manuel Periera. Through the years,
though, the students have learned not to be
petrified by his imposing stature since he is a
fair and understanding man. Nevertheless,
few students cherish the opportunity to be
sent to Periera's office. The Saturday school
potential is often a strong deterrent to tar-
diness and misbehavior. Many students have
attested that Mr. Periera is actually a vv cool
guy" and that his punishments are fair.

Miss Anne Romano

This year Miss Anne Romano, our principal,
celebrates her 40th year at Jonathan Dayton.
Beginning as a student, returning as a teacher
and finally assuming the job of principal, she
stands firmly as the backbone of the high
school. Her many years of service have
earned her the respect of one and all. The
class of 84 is grateful for her dedication, and
for the faith and pride she holds in us. We are
certain she will enrich the lives of many
students to come.

STUDENT
COUNCIL

The Student Council is an organization whose primary design
is to function as a coordinating unit between the school ad-
ministration and the student body. The Council puts into force
the regulations of the administration wherein they are involved
and enacts legislation deemed beneficial to the student body.
The students of Jonathan Dayton Regional High School take
part in school and Council affairs in order to increase the
stature of the school and bring about better relations between
the Council and the student body, faculty and administration.

ir way of lite. The Key Club, a service organization, prides itself on aiding both the school and community. This
year's International Themfe, "Confront Confusion, Discover Direction," has prompted club officers to organize numerous ac-
tivities to benefit charity groups. Two of the most successful fund raising activities were the Leukemia Bowl-A-Thon raising
4,000, and a Mothers' March tor the March of Dimes raising over $1,000 ||

Highlights of the year for key Clubbers include the Leadership Training Conference held in the fall at Great adventure Park
and the N.J. District Convention held from April 6-8 at Mount Airy Lodge in the Poconos. Since Dayton is ranked as one of tN
top clubs in the country, club members hope to place well in the achievement, single service, and scrapbook awards at the ex*

LATIN CLUB

The Latin Club, headed by Mrs. Barbara
Hedges, has highlighted its past several
years with many fun activities. Saturnalia, a
typical celebration of Latin speaking coun-
tries for the winter holidays, is an event
greatly enjoyed by the club. Later on, the
club had a traditional Halloween party and
all of its members came dressed as all kinds
of things! In the spring the Latin Club at-
tended the state convention.

Although the language - Latin is not
spoken and is considered a "dead
language" — the Latin club is certainly alive
and full of spirit.

Governor Kean is surrounded by our "White Hat Girls.

The Governor wonders why his guide is not wearing her
white hat.

The Student Auxiliary is composed of about
twenty girls from all four grades. Under the
direction of Mrs. Eleanor Billig, the girls, in
their familiar white hats, prevent confusion by
directing students and parents at various
school functions. Besides ushering at plays
and musicals, the student auxiliary directs
parents on Back to School Night, and incom-
ing eighth graders at Freshman Orientation. A j
very special treat for the girls was greeting
Governor Kean.

So the next time you lose your way . . .
look for the girl in the little white hat!

The Executive Search Club, a fairly new program, consists
of students from the Accounting II class. The club's advisor is
Mr. Julius Rossi. The members' main purpose is to help peo-
ple who are less fortunate. An example of the Clubs' ac-
tivities is the annual Christmas "Sharing is Caring" program in
which half of the food made is given to needy families. The
club tries to service students in the school filing income tax
returns. Also, an annual field trip is taken to the New York
Stock Exchange and guest speakers from the Business world
are provided to the class. In the future, the club hopes to
receive a greater standard in helping the community and the
student body.

DRAMA CLUB

Brian Dailey, Mr. Trinity, Chris Cochran and Ellen Friedman study a student workshop production.

Under the talented leadership of Mr.
Joseph Trinity, the Drama Club gives
students opportunities to learn and
develop various acting skills. Besides be-
ing involved in the school's productions
of "Barefoot in the Park", "Hello Dolly"
and "The Curious Savage," Drama Club
members present plays and scenes dur-
ing their after school meetings. These
student productions help develop the
talents of the students by the presenta-
tion and the critiques given by fellow
students.

This year the club had a number of
fund raisers to help raise money for the
Spring production. Having active
membership in the Drama Club, in-
volvement in plays and work behind the
scenes often lead to admittance to the
National Thespian Society. The Society
is established to honor their students
who demonstrate outstanding
achievement.

GYMNASTICS

The 1983 season proved to be
very successful for the Jonathan
Dayton Gymnastics Team.
Despite their difficult schedule
they finished the year with a
respectable 9-5 record and a 4th
place finish in both the Union
County Tournament and the
Bulldog Invitational Meet.

Unfortunately Linda Anagnos
and Carol Carpenter, the team's
co-captains, and senior )oanne
Fusco, missed part of the season
due to injuries; however, they
provided the team with the
leadership and enthusiasm need-
ed for a successful season.

The majority of the team's scor-
ing came from the all-around per-
formers, Carmela Carpenter, Gina
Pashaian, and Karen Rose. They
worked very hard during the off-
season, and it was apparent in all-
around performances.

GET A KICK OUT OF GIRLS'

SOCCER

This year the girls' varsity
soccer team showed some
good talent. The four captains;
Lisa Wood, Patty Kelly, Michele
Coddington, and Kathy Meix-

team. Outstanding defense
was played by Mario Cod-
dington, Nancy Klaskin, and
freshman Suzanne Crane. The
team faced a very tough
schedule, but played well
against their opponents. With a
large amount of underclassmen
returning next year, the team
should do well.

SWINGING TO A WINNING SEASON

This year the girls tennis team, under the coaching of Ed
Jasinsky, had an awesome season. With a record of 19-4,
the Team placed second in the county tournament and cap-
tured the title of Mountain Valley Conference Champions.
Seniors Alison Keehn, Linda Hockstein, and )anie Ginsberg,
who all will receive gold varsity letters this year, have put in
much time and effort to the development of the team.

Elizabeth Schramm returned to her spot at first singles and
placed second in the Union County Tournament. At second
singles, Linda Hockstein had only one loss and took first
place in the County Tournament. Newcomer Kim Sommers
took over the third singles spot. Alison Keehn and Janie
Ginsberg defended the team at first doubles and Vicki
Anderson and (eanie Perotta played second doubles
rotating occasionally with Nina Kleiner and Elisa Segal. Coach
Jasinsky was extremely happy with the team's performance
and has high hopes for next year's season.

led by Senior, Glenn L. Booker, who was
named the best defensive player on the
team. Junior, Mike Graziano, was a main
asset, leading the team in steals. Offensive-
ly, Mitchel Nenner contributed a strong
force at point guard, with Eric Wolf there
to assist with his "clutch" defensive plays.
David Cole also contributed on rebound-

GIRLS' BASKETBALL -
A WINNING SEASON

This year the girl's varsity basketball
team had one of the best seasons in many
years. The lady Bulldogs posted a 16-7
record. Included in this record are
cherished wins against Ridge and Gover-
nor Livingston, which helped them to win
second place in the conference. The peo-
ple that made it happen were, seniors,
Kathy Drummond, Linda Hockstein, Traci
Karr, and Lisa Wood, juniors, of Kathy
Meixner, Michele Coddington, Moira
Quillin, sophomore, Dawn Pohlman, and
Coach Arthur Krupp.

The 1983 Wrestling season again ended
a strong 10 win 4 loss season. The
"Dawgs" were led by senior co-captains
Tony Apicella (20-8) and Alfie Heckel (25-
6). The dual meet season was highlighted
by an impressive victory over the number
one team in Union County, Governor Liv-
ingston H.S., and also defeating Central
Jersey Group I State Champion Bound
Brook. Other senior letter winners include
Jack Zotti and Vince Castellani.

The Dayton Girls' winter track team
had an outstanding season this year.
Leading them on to victory were
seniors, Mary Pat Parducci, Laura
Richter, Karen Apicella, Amy Kiell, Nan-
cy Gaglio, Donna Commorato and San-
dy Brenner. Traci Biber and the other
underclassmen also had a very suc-
cessful season. Perhaps the highlight of
the season was winning the Group II
State Championship. This is a first in the
history of Dayton Track. Everyone
worked hard together as a team and it
all paid off in the end.

The Dayton Boys' track team had a
very successful season. Among the
outstanding runners were Brian Speer,
Thomas Lausten, Walter Clarke, Scott
Viglianti, Walter Jackson, and John
Dahmen. Along with them were the
other underclassmen who all put forth a
great effort. Mr. Byrne was very proud
of his team and hopes next years team
will be as successful.

UP YOUR ALLEY

The Dayton Bowling Team went into the
1984 season as the defending champions
of the Mountain Valley Conference.
Coached by Mr. )ohn Swedish, the team
tried hard to defend the title. Captain
Sharon Kutsop had the high average for
the season and all the team tried their best
to defend the championship. Unfortunate-
ly, the team could not overcome the loss
of three starters as they fell to third place in
the conference.

HOMECOMING '83

The Fall Festival this year included the annual banner making contest and
hall decorating. The excitement lasted until the final announcement was
made. The Seniors, who displayed creativity by decorating their hall in black
and white with the theme of Hollywood, took first place in the overall
competition.

To conclude this high spirited week the homecoming dance took place on
November 18. The finalists were introduced early in the evening. Michael
Boland, Walter Clarke, Matt Dooley, Chris Federico, Michael McNany and
Richard Policastro were announced as Mr. Regional finalists. The Homecom-
ing Queen finalist were Karen Apicella, Linda Anagnos, Carol Carpenter, Linda
Hockstein, Karen Rose, and Laura Stancati. After all the votes were counted
the winners were announced. Richard Policastro was crowned Mr. Regional
and Linda Hockstein was announced as Homecoming Queen. Also, Craig
Kobrin was voted Court jester.

Richie and Linda are both excellent athletes. Richie is captain of the football
team and pitcher for the baseball team. Linda is also an outstanding athlete.
By the end of her Senior year she will have three gold varsity letters in tennis,
basketball and track.

In addition, the following homecoming court was announced, Carmela
Carpenter (85) Louise Apicella (86) and Dina Calabrese (87). All the winners
should be congratulated on their enthusiasm and school spirit.

MR. EARL HENDLER

Jonathan Dayton suffered a great loss when a respected member of our faculty, Mr. Earl Hendier, passed
away on December 18, 1983.

Mr. Hendier was born on December 17, 1917. His mother was a Hebrew teacher. Mr. Hendler's diverse
interests developed from his love of education. Devouring knowledge, Mr. Hendier received his Bachelor's
Degree from Rutgers and his Master's from Columbia. He continued his education by completing all the
academic work for a PhD in English at Rutgers. El A

In addition to Mr. Hendler's passion for teaching and his involvement with the American Federation of
eachers, he had many other diverse interests. As a youngster he played in the New Jersey All State Or-
chestra and carried his talent and love of the violin through his entire life. As a man he was a classical music
and jazz enthusiast. Art, politics and science were Mr. Hendler's "passions" and he had quite an affinity for
them.

Beginning his teaching career in Newark, Mr. Hendier came to Dayton and taught Effective Writing,
Shakespeare and Tragedy and English Literature. Mr. Hendier was also a published poet. Literature
magazines such as "The Minnesota Review," "Commentary" and "Prairie Schooner" published his works.

Mr. Hendier will be remembered for his love of education and for his devotion to his students. He will be
greatly missed.
